School of Mathematics and Information Science, formerly known as the Department of Mathematics, was founded in 1931. Prof. Li Guoping, a renowned mathematician and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Mai Jiehua, rewarded as “National Excellent Teacher”, both have taught here. At present, the school consists of the Department of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and the Department of Information and Computing Science, and the Department of Public Elementary Course of University Mathematics. The school is equipped with the key laboratory of Mathematics and its Application for universities in Guangxi, and the Center for Applied Mathematics of Guangxi these two scientific research platforms, as well as the talents highland and innovation team of "Operations Research and Optimal Control" built for universities in Guangxi. Moreover, there are five research institutions and innovation teams, such as the high-level innovation team "Decision Models and its Application" and "Optimization Theory and Method and its Application" of universities in Guangxi. In addition, there are two research centers: the Guangxi Mathematical Research Center and the University Mathematics Education and Teaching Research Center, which provide affiliated programs for the Guangxi Mathematics Society.
The school was authorized to provide master's degree programs in Basic Mathematics in 1984, Applied Mathematics in 1986, First-level Discipline in Mathematics in 2006, and was accredited as the only key First-level discipline in Mathematics in Guangxi. The school obtained a first-level discipline doctoral degree in Mathematics authorization points in 2021, was selected as one of the first-level disciplines (Category B) in Guangxi in 2022, and was approved to set up a post-doctoral research station in mathematics in 2023.
As of June 2024, the school has 85 faculty members, including 69 full-time teachers and 16 teaching assistants and administrators. More than 75% of the full-time teachers own doctoral degrees, among whom 21 are professors and 26 are associate professors. There are 15 doctoral supervisors and 28 master supervisors. The school currently has 3 National High-level Talents with Youth Project; 1 leader of a key program funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China; 1 recipient of the special government allowance from the State Council; 4 scholars with the prestigious title of Guangxi Bagui Young Scholar; 3 talents in Training Program for 1,000 young and middle-aged backbone teachers in Guangxi, 2 second-level candidates for Guangxi "Shibaiqian" Talent Project; 1 winner of Guangxi May Day Labor Medal; 1 talent awarded the "One Hundred Young and Middle-aged Discipline Leaders in universities of Guangxi"; 1 talent awarded the "Outstanding Talent in universities of Guangxi"; 4 talents awarded “Junwu Scholars of Guangxi University”.
Graduate students are recruited and trained in five research areas: Basic Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, and Operations Research and Cybernetics.
In terms of undergraduate education, the school has established two majors, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science. Among them, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is the first-class undergraduate major at the state level and the five-star major of Guangxi Autonomous Region. Information and Computing Science is a district-level first-class undergraduate program. In addition, there are innovation training experimental classes for “Mathematical Excellence”, “Mathematical Science”, and “Information Science” as well.
Over the past five years, talents in the school have published more than 300 papers in international well-known journals such as Advances in Mathematics, Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal., Mathematische Annalen., SIAM J. Optim., Journal of Functional Analysis, Journal of Differential Equations, Indiana Univ. Math. J. The school has hosted 33 projects (1 key project) supported by the National Natural Science Foundation and 5 projects supported by Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of Guangxi Natural Science Foundation, taking the lead of 7 key projects supported by Guangxi Natural Science Foundation. Talents in our school have also published 6 academic monographs and won 3 second prizes in the Guangxi Natural Science Award. The school was also granted for 17 projects from Guangxi Higher Education Undergraduate Teaching Reform, among which 1 is a key one, and published 3 textbooks (1 one them published by Higher Education Press). All of these achievements strongly support the "Double First-Class"(world-class university with world-class disciplines) construction of the university and greatly promote Guangxi's economic and social development.
