Guangxi University has a long tradition in art education. When Mr. Ma Junwu served as the first president in 1928, he strongly supported the promotion and implementation of this concept: "truthfulness, goodness, and beauty". He also personally created a large number of poems and writings, which are still engraved in the sculpture garden of the university today. As early as 1936, at the Yan Shan Yuan campus of Guilin, Guangxi University, many famous drama masters such as Jiao Juyin, Ouyang Yuqian, and Ding Xilin were hired as professors to guide students in artistic creation and practical activities, thus forming a precious tradition of emphasizing artistic creation and aesthetic education.
Guangxi University established an Art Education Research Room in 1997, a Department of Art in September 2007, and officially established the School of the Arts on October 31, 2008. Currently, the School of the Arts has a total of 69 staff members, including 66 officially employed personnel and 53 full-time teachers. The School of the Arts has one "Bagui Scholar" high-level talent, 6 professors, 18 associate professors, and 13 faculty members with doctoral degrees.
The school currently has five departments: Music, Dance, Fine Arts, Art Design, and Drama and Film Literature. It has one Professional Master's Degree Authorization Point, which includes three directions: Drama and Film Literature, Music, and Design. At present, there are 822 undergraduate and 144 graduate students.
Discipline development and talent training. The school took the lead in applying for the project of Ministry of Education. The project “Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture (Cai Diao opera) Inheritance Base” was approved in 2020. "The Campus Theater Creative Art Joint Graduate Education Base" was approved in 2019 as a demonstration project of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GZAR) Graduate Joint Education Base. The majors of Music and Fine Arts have been listed as national first-class undergraduate major development sites, while the majors of Dance and Art Design have been listed as provincial first-class undergraduate major development sites. In the 6th National University Student Art Exhibition, the School of the Arts of Guangxi University won 2 first prizes and 1 second prize under the guidance of its teachers for undergraduate and graduate students, and also received 2 second prizes for excellent innovative cases in art education reform. Original drama works from the School of the Arts were selected for the gold, silver, and bronze awards in the Guangxi Drama Exhibition held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. These works were sponsored by the CPC publicity department of GZAR.
Artistic creation and scientific research. The dance works created and articles written by the faculty of the school have been selected for the "Tao Li Cup" national dance competition and the "Lotus Award" Chinese folk dance competition. The school has won six "Tong Gu Awards", the highest prize for literary and artistic creation in Guangxi, three “Five One” Project Awards” for spiritual and cultural development in Guangxi, two "Hua Shan Awards" for literary and artistic creation in Guangxi, and four awards for outstanding achievements in social science research in Guangxi. For research projects, the school has obtained three grants from China National Arts Fund, one individual project from the National Social and Science Fund on "rare and disappearing traditional art forms", two general projects and one young scholar project from the National Social and Science Fund on Art, as well as one project from the Western Project of the National Social and Science Fund. The faculty and students of the school have participated in various national and regional events, such as serving in major roles in the National Day Parade on Tiananmen Square for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, performing in the "Great Journey" cultural show for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China in Beijing, performing in the 60th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Guangxi, performing in the original musical "Xue Se Xiang Jiang"(Bloody Xiangjiang) by the Guangxi Cultural Industry Group, creating and participating in the poverty alleviation musical "Rongshui Ballad" by the Northwestern Polytechnical University, and participating in the performance activities for the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan in Beijing. The campus musical "Hua Shan Qi Yuan"(Strange Encounters in Flower Mountain) co-produced by the School of the Arts and the Junwu Cultural Research Institute, and directed and scripted by Dean Hu Hongyi, was selected as one of the first batch of supported projects in the "Three-year Plan for Guangxi Contemporary Literary and Artistic Creation Project".
Artistic education, ideological and political work, and Communist Party activities. The School of the Arts vigorously promotes and practices the Aesthetic Education Immersion Program, and has organized theme-based party lessons such as Art + Party History, Music + Party History, Dance + Party History, etc. It has successfully created and implemented the Project "Ideological and Political Education through Campus Theater", The school has deeply implemented ideological and political education in art courses, offering more than 50 elective courses in art education and public art throughout the university, developing five exemplary courses with ideological and political education. Besides, it has cooperated with the project of Ministry of Education, “Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture (Cai Diao opera) Inheritance Base”, opening 7 special courses related to Cai Diao opera. The school also has collaborated with the puppet theater of Guangxi Cultural Industry Group to create and perform the puppet musical "Ji Mao Xin"(The Letter With Feathers). The production was selected as a key gift project for celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and was included as a major project supported by the "Guangxi Contemporary Literary and Artistic Creation Project" of the publicity department of the party committee in Guangxi.
The School of the Arts is supported by Guangxi University, the only university in Guangxi included in the national "211 Project, a key university included in the National project of building world-class discipline, , and a university jointly-built by and with abundant resources from the Ministry of Education and the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The school strives to practice the motto of Guangxi University:"diligence and sincerity". The school takes "building a research and teaching foundation, creating a discipline platform, bolstering comprehensive strength, forming distinctive development, and striving for first-class status in Guangxi" as its school orientation. With the rich ethnic minority cultural and artistic resources of Guangxi and the geopolitical cultural relationships with Southeast Asia as its features, the school focuses on cultivating comprehensive art professionals with local, ethnic, international, and innovative characteristics. It has begun to form the features of art education integrating art and literature, engaging art and science, intersecting art and engineering, converging tradition and modernity, and fusing of theory and practice.
